Scientology and the aftermath1/31/2024 ![]() The moment feels like she’s going a step too far - interfering between husband and wife - but it’s revealing, demonstrating far more about Scientology than the litany of abuses detailed by the subject of “Star Witness,” the premiere episode. In the “Emotional Aftermath” special, Remini stops the conversation to point out that Rinder is unable to comfort his wife because of the way Scientology teaches followers to reject any emotion that isn’t anger. Remini is trying on a more reserved demeanor, but the moments that find her in full passionate outburst are the most compelling. Remini remains on as shepherdess and she’s joined again by Rinder, former senior executive of the Church of Scientology International and the Sea Organization. Unfortunately, neither the pre-air special nor the premiere episode attempts to tackle these big questions, instead presenting more of the same interviews and explainers about the religion we’ve already seen in the first two seasons. It’s not easy for a series to leave you both breathless and melancholy but Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermathmanages to achieve both. One pre-air special has Remini and Rinder interviewing Remini’s mother and sisters and Rinder’s wife it’s a lot of information that requires emotional heavy lifting. The third season begins with two specials that exist outside the season, presenting another three hours of content before the season premiere. One tactic to answer these questions is to bombard the audience with more information. These are all massive questions and incredibly ambitious to tackle. As the prominence of the series and Remini herself has shifted and grown, it’s not unreasonable to raise an eyebrow at the utility of “awareness.” The third season attempts to expand the focus by examining the tax-exempt status of Scientology, how the Church follows and harasses people who speak out publicly, and the search for Shelly Miscavige, the wife of the leader of the church who has not made a public appearance since 2007. The first two seasons relied heavily on Remini and Mike Rinder facilitating conversation by using their own histories breaking with the church. The show profiles former members of the church as they recount their experience within Scientology and their decision to leave the church. It’s natural for a docuseries to look beyond its two hosts and begin to examine their methods and influence. What impact is the show having on the Church of Scientology? Is the series having an impact? What should the impact of a series like this be? I stand by them and I stand by all Scientology victims who are willing to come forward. As A&E’s Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath enters its third season, the series questions itself. ![]() These are women who are not willing to … I think they deserve their day in court. That’s their purpose: to scare people into not speaking. They know how to scare people into silence. I understand what that takes to keep your composure, to not be scared, to not feel violated, but Scientology knows how to f-k with people and their mind. You have people showing up to your home, on your property, and you’re going to the police and saying this is happening and I’m being harassed…. We’ve talked to all of, but only two felt comfortable coming forward at this time. Will portions from that episode appear in this special? I sensed you felt that way when it was reported that the Danny Masterson episode from season 3 was shelved. (A source close to the show tells EW that outside pressure from the church did not play a part in the decision to end the show, while an attorney for the church says Fair Game is not in action, and “exists only as a mantra used by anti-Scientologists to generate hate and bigotry against the Church and its members”). ![]() But, anyone forwarding Scientology’s bulls- is complicit to me. If you’re an advertiser, wherever you are, receiving 20-30 letters a week saying this show is hateful… they’ve accused me of inciting murder, and the New York Post ran with that headline, so did TMZ, and they can both kiss my fat ass for doing so. I’ve done the math there are about seven people writing those letters, all Scientologists working for the STAND League. Now, enter the STAND League, which is a front group for Scientology pretending to be an organization protecting the religious beliefs of others. Then, if that doesn’t work, go after their job. In short, the policy says find out what the person seeks to protect…. the Fair Game directives say you can certainly cost their job. That’s Scientology’s Fair Game policy, which the church says it has abandoned, right? Are you suggesting Scientology’s Fair Game policies played a role in the show’s end?

Squids fluid1/31/2024 ![]() But cephalopods only have one type of photoreceptor cell, rendering it colorblind. ![]() In combination, these cones allow us to see a wide breadth of color hues. Humans have three different types of cones: one that detects red wavelengths of light, one that detects blue, and one that detects green. In animals and humans these cells are called cones, a distinction from the light sensitive cells called rods. The ability to see color relies on specialized receptor cells. The gene is considered a master control gene-meaning it orchestrates how to make an eye (like an instruction manual) rather than constructing the individual building blocks.ĭespite the complexity of their eyes, cephalopods are most likely colorblind. A study by scientists at the Nagahama Institute of Bio-Science and Technology found that this similarity is due to one shared gene, Pa圆, traced back to our last common ancestor, more than 500 million years ago. ![]() Even more remarkably, the complex eyes of humans and cephalopods are surprisingly similar in design considering the two evolved independently. The rest of the cephalopods have complicated eyes. They are able to dilate and constrict their pupils in varying light intensities and can probably distinguish very simple visual cues. Only the nautilus has a comparatively basic eye anatomy, relying on a pinhole pupil without a lens. Octopus, squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus all have differently shaped pupils- an octopus has a rectangular pupil, a cuttlefish has a w-shaped pupil, and a squid’s pupil is circular. Most cephalopod eyes, like human eyes, contain an iris, pupil, lens, and in some cases, a cornea. In some cephalopods the eyes are as complex as the human eye, and the eye of the giant squid is enormous. SightĬephalopods are famous for their eyes. ![]() These arms lack suckers but are lined with sticky grooves that help them grab prey. The nautilus boasts an amazing 90 plus arms. Inspired by the strength and suction mechanism of octopus suckers, scientists are using them as models for medical adhesives and attachment in robots. The muscle contraction causes water pressure within the sucker cavity to drop and the higher pressure of the surrounding open ocean forces the sucker surface against its chosen target, creating a strong hold. Trapped within the sucker cavity, the water has nowhere to go as the sucker muscles contract. Upon coming in contact with an object, like a tasty crab or rocky ledge, the sucker surface creates a seal with the object. Only the chambered nautiluses have an external shell.Īn octopus is a bit more dexterous than a squid, and uses its arms for a variety of tasks including walking and handling objects. Some have hard, internal structures, like the cuttlebone in the cuttlefish and the pen in the squid, that evolved from the hard, outer shells of their ancestors, but in many octopuses the hard structure is completely lost. The basic cephalopod body plan includes two eyes, a mantle, a funnel (also called a siphon), and at least eight arms. Cephalopods have long fascinated humans and were frequently mentioned by Aristotle, and this fascination shows no signs of diminishing today.Īnatomy, Diversity, and Evolution AnatomyĬephalopod literally means “head foot” in Greek, a reference to the way the cephalopod’s head connects to its many arms. The largest-the giant squid-measures longer than a school bus, while the smallest ones-like the pygmy squid and California lilliput octopus-could sit on the tip of your finger. Early in their evolution, cephalopods relied on the sturdy protection of shells, but over time many eventually lost the outer shell and instead relied on new adaptations like heightened intelligence, a talent for hiding, and strong, flexible arms. A highly intelligent group of ocean dwelling creatures, the living cephalopods include the eight-armed octopuses, the ten-armed squids and cuttlefishes, and the shelled chambered nautiluses.

Hexcells review ign1/31/2024 ![]() It’s been ages since we got a great single-player Star Wars action game, but Jedi: Fallen Order makes up for a lot of lost time. These sabers pair nicely with the expanded set of Force powers that allow you to do things like pull in an entire group of enemies close before executing a spinning slash to cut them all down like blades of grass. Of course, once I unlocked the ability to throw my Crossguard saber to hit enemies a little farther away I felt like either stance was capable of taking down just about any enemy when needed and settled in for the ride. ![]() You don’t even have to be all that good at nailing the timing of strikes, parries, and dodges for fights to look spectacular and smooth as you carve a swath through enemies (but if you are it looks even cooler), and the fact that arms and legs can now sometimes get severed from Storm Troopers and other humanoids – not just droids and creatures, who get absolutely shredded – makes it feel more gratifyingly powerful than ever during kill animations.Īfter dabbling in the single, double-bladed, and dual-wielding stances that carry over from Fallen Order, I settled on the two new ones: the Kylo Ren-inspired Crossguard style and the hybrid Blaster stance that answers the question of “wouldn’t it be cool if Han Solo were also a Jedi?” The Crossguard treats your lightsaber as a slow and heavy broadsword that’s great for hammering a stunned target into the floor, while the latter equips you with a sidearm to dispatch small enemies without having to close the gap and sure makes short work of flamethrower troopers, packs of animals, or others who like to get in close. Survivor kicks up the excellent dueling from Fallen Order by several notches with five different fighting stances that are all brilliantly animated to create some of the flashiest and fiercest Star Wars melee battles I’ve ever seen. ![]() Moving around is definitely satisfying but lightsabers are, of course, the stars of the war. It’s not as though Survivor invented the air dash, but Respawn makes excellent use of it, further flexing those Titanfall muscles. When you unlock the mid-air dash ability to pair with your double-jump, things really take off – you can cover such crazy distances without touching the ground, changing directions twice to reach things around corners, that I had to completely rethink what was possible. And that’s just the beginning – the Spider-Man-style grapple (which only works on pre-designated points) is introduced before you leave Coruscant, and the unlocks keep coming from there on at a rewarding pace. You’re quickly thrown right back into Force-pushing Storm Troopers off of ledges and chaining together movement tricks like wall-running, climbing, swinging, and sliding down ramps. So we’re already off to an exciting running start when things kick off with a brief caper on Imperial Coruscant that calls back to A New Hope before making a thrilling escape. Before you buy it, make sure to watch our in-depth Performance review. All music emanates from a mysterious hole in the box engraved 'Jack de Quidt wuz here'.Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's launch has been rocky, especially on the PC version, which Respawn has publicly apologized for and already begun to patch. After the second fryįries need to cook in hot duck fat twice. ![]() A good dash of our duck and veal demi- glace balanced out the flavor and made the color a bit darker. Our gravy is homemade with real chicken and beef stock, though we went a little too heavy on the chicken-to-beef stock ratio. The gravy – beef & chicken stock with demi-glace One batch in the duck fat & parcooked fries on the rack. The great thing about duck fat is that you can reuse it (if it’s not burned), so let it cool and pour it into jar. We used 4 of our 7 ounce containers of it in this recipe.
